Healthcare & Medical Services

Everything you need to know about hospitals, clinics, doctors, and medical services in White Rock and South Surrey.

Peace Arch Hospital

The Community Hospital

Peace Arch Hospital (PAH) is the main hospital serving White Rock and South Surrey. Located at 15521 Russell Avenue in White Rock, it is part of the Fraser Health Authority and has served the community since 1954.

The hospital provides a wide range of services including a 24/7 emergency department, surgical services, maternity and obstetrics, diagnostic imaging (X-ray, CT, ultrasound), laboratory services, and inpatient care across medical and surgical wards.

While PAH handles most routine emergencies and medical needs, it is important to understand its limitations. It is not a trauma centre; serious trauma cases are transferred to Surrey Memorial Hospital or Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Complex cardiac, neurological, and cancer care is also typically referred to larger regional centres.

The Peace Arch Hospital Foundation actively fundraises for equipment upgrades and facility improvements, and the hospital has undergone significant renovations in recent years to modernize its facilities and expand capacity.

  • Some clinics accept same-day phone bookings, which can eliminate in-person wait times.
  • For non-urgent health questions, call HealthLink BC at 811 before visiting a clinic.

Finding a Family Doctor

The Doctor Shortage

Like much of British Columbia, White Rock and South Surrey face a significant shortage of family physicians. Many existing GPs have full patient rosters and are not accepting new patients. This is a province-wide challenge driven by physician retirements, population growth, and the economics of family medicine.

For new residents, finding a family doctor can take months or even longer. In the meantime, walk-in clinics and virtual care options fill the gap, but they lack the continuity of a dedicated family physician.

How to Find a GP

BC's Health Connect Registry is the official provincial system for matching patients with family doctors. Register online through the BC government website and you will be contacted when a doctor becomes available in your area.

  • Register with BC Health Connect as soon as you move
  • Call individual clinics directly to ask about openings
  • Consider Nurse Practitioner-led clinics as an alternative
  • Virtual care platforms (Telus Health, Babylon) can bridge the gap
  • Ask neighbours and community groups for recommendations

Specialists & Referrals

Some specialist services are available locally, but many require travelling to Surrey or Vancouver. Here is what to expect.

Available Locally

White Rock and nearby South Surrey have a reasonable selection of local specialists, particularly in fields that serve the community's older demographic.

  • General surgery (at Peace Arch Hospital)
  • Obstetrics and gynecology
  • Internal medicine
  • Ophthalmology and optometry

Requires Travel

For many specialist services, patients are referred to larger centres. Surrey Memorial Hospital (20 min drive) and Vancouver hospitals handle more complex care.

  • Cardiology and cardiac surgery
  • Dermatology (long wait times province-wide)
  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Neurology and neurosurgery
  • Oncology (BC Cancer Agency in Surrey/Vancouver)
  • Pediatric specialists (BC Children's Hospital)

Dental, Pharmacy & Mental Health

Dental Care

White Rock has a healthy concentration of dental offices, primarily along Johnston Road and the 152nd Street corridor. Most practices offer general dentistry, hygiene, cosmetic procedures, and some orthodontic services.

Finding a dentist is generally easier than finding a family doctor. Most offices accept new patients and offer same-day emergency appointments for urgent dental issues. Several practices also offer pediatric dentistry.

White Rock and South Surrey are well served by pharmacies, with multiple options for prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and health consultations.

  • Shoppers Drug Mart (multiple locations, extended hours)
